Gerard McKinney raises over £1,500 for charity with Cyprus cycle

Hub director Gerard McKinney

Congratulations to director Gerard McKinney (front left) for raising over £1,500 for charity with a tough and very hot 380-mile cycle across Cyprus!

Gerard was one of 19 cyclists, supported by a back-up team, who took part in the five-day challenge on behalf of the Birmingham Irish Cycle Appeal (BICA).

The appeal supports helps charities and good causes including Birmingham Irish Dementia Care Centre, Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer, Kingsbury Academy and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The route started in Paphos travelling to Limassol and on to Nicosia. On the third day they travelled up Mount Olympus in the Troodos mountains, and from there to Kato Pyrgos and back to Paphos.

Gerard said: “It was an incredible experience, and we took in some wonderful places and views. But with temperatures at close to 30 degrees and lots of uphill cycling it got tough at times! Thankfully our backup crew, including Peter the ‘Iceman’, was always on hand with much needed ice and water.

“Huge thanks to everyone who sponsored me. Each cyclist funded their own travel and accommodation so that every penny goes to our good causes.”

The total amount raised from the cycle is expected to be tens of thousands of pounds. It will be announced in December at the BICA Christmas party.
